Building work on our permanent home in Fernwood, Newark, is now well underway.

We are all really excited about the facilities this will provide for our students and for the wider community. You can keep up to date with the progress of the build on Twitter @SuthersSchool and find out more about how the finished site will look by browsing through the information below.

Location and Site

Located on the Fernwood Business Park, the 830-place school (including sixth form provision for 230 students), will benefit from the excellent transport links and infrastructure currently in place and proposed as part of the new housing developments in the area. The school will have a dedicated bus drop-off point and staff parking on site, ensuring safe access to the school site for road users. A dedicated pedestrian arrival space and bike parking ensure that the school offers greener transport options for all users of the site.

The school will offer two full-size football pitches and two Multi-Use Games Areas for external sporting activities. A landscaped courtyard within a sheltered quadrangle will provide surfaced spaces for students during inclement weather and a proposed kitchen garden will provide enrichment opportunities for students.

The site will be developed with environmentally-friendly water management systems incorporating permeable surfaces, bio-swales and balancing ponds. To the west of the site, a bank will be constructed to manage road noise from the A1 and planted with native species creating an green corridor. In addition, the north and east boundaries of the site will be planted with British hedgerow species and meadow grasses to maintain the semi-rural location and nature of the site. The playing fields will be bordered by weldmesh fencing to ensure a secure safeguarding line for Suthers students.

Educational Facilities and Community Use

Designed for 600 11–16 aged students with additional sixth form provision for 230 students, the 830-place school has been created to provide a balanced suite of subjects with a focus on an academic curriculum supported by creative-, sports- and design-based complimentary subjects.

From the double height entrance, through the open dining space to the courtyard, the school has been developed to provide a sense of openness and welcome. On the ground floor, a main hall equipped with tiered seating and theatrical lighting compliments the Drama and Music teaching spaces. Art, Design and Technology and Food Technology are also grouped on this floor along with changing rooms, sports hall and activity studio. With a dedicated community entrance, these exciting new facilities will be available to the local community after school hours, providing a new resource for sport, leisure and life-long learning.

On the first floor the Post-16 study and social areas are located close to the school library, a space reimagined for the 21st century where the printed word compliments all the advantages of digital resources. English and Maths are accommodated on this floor, served by three computer suites providing generous ICT facilities.

On the second floor, six science labs are served by the science preparation room and humanities and language classrooms complete the accommodation.

Throughout the building, each academic year has a designated office and five surrounding classrooms which will also serve as a year base. This arrangement provides a sense of community within the school for students and staff.
